Places We Love: The Maji Beach Boutique Hotel

Sometimes people use the words “boutique hotel” to represent small, low amenity foolery that excuses it being otherwise not great. Other times, “boutique hotel” is used in all the right ways, special touches, a dose of history, and true connection – The Maji Beach Boutique Hotel is the latter and we can’t get enough of this corner of wonderful in Diani Beach, Kenya. Diani is a beach town near Mombasa, Kenya. It’s got some “baby Zanzibar” vibes with Maasai strolling the sand, kitesurfing, and calm waves perfect for swimming. A true resort town popular with British, Dutch, and German tourists we were looking for a place that was intimate and driven by the culture. We found it at The Maji. The first thing you notice when you walk is the water – “Maji” is actually Swahili for water. The pool at the Maji actually begins in the lobby and winds around to […]

Already Home: Gabon Three Ways

“So tell me again you are from Cameroon right? No … Congo?” <—– Neither. I am from GABON. A country located on the equator on the west coast of central Africa. Often confused with larger countries in this part of the continent – Gabon is mostly known for it’s wildlife and not enough for the people, culture, and energy that truly makes my homeland great. On a recent escape from Paris, I explored a land whose flag best describes what you see when you touch down: Yellow for the sun, Blue for the ocean, and Green for the forests. Here’s my guide to enjoying the best of these in my little corner of Eden. SUN – LA VIDA IN LIBREVILLE Sunrise by the Seashore Libreville is definitely a beach city in the making. In recent years the seaside has become joyfully crowded on weekends, a mix of family beach picnics, teenagers selfies, and […]

Best AirBnB’s in Africa: Zanzibar

In the last of our AirBnB series (for now) we take you to Zanzibar, Tanzania a place where you probably aren’t even thinking about the home sharing service. Zanzibar has some of our favorite hotels from cute boutique places to all out luxury. For the exclusive set or longer stays you might want the intimacy of your own place. From our point of view, AirBnB in Zanzibar is best for group travel – think a destination wedding with your closest friends or the ultimate vacay with your #squad. The listings for smaller places are for the most part underwhelming – you’re better off checking out a more traditional hotel. For solo travelers or couples Unique Beach Tower // $150 per night Located on the quiet beaches of Matemwe, Tim and Joyce’s UtupoaUpepo beach tower is super dope. It’s three floors are located right on the beach and are full of unique touches. For […]

Best AirBnB’s in Africa: Cape Town

Cape Town is hands down one of the best places to AirBnb. Amazing architecture, low cost of living, and views of mountain tops and ocean waves at almost every turn – it’s hard not to instagram every moment. Curating the Cape Town list was hard because there were so many good ones out there – there are more than 300 listings no matter what category you choose. We focus here on the “awe-worthy”, host, and proximity to the best things to do (including TSTMKRS app experiences). Mountain Views and Kloof St. Vibes // $52 per night One of our favorite things to do in Cape Town is to vibe out at Ashoka on Tuesday nights – one of our least favorite things the ride back home after one too many of their delicious cocktails. Never fear – Desiré’s beautiful flat is within walking distance of our favorite bar and tons of […]

Best AirBnB’s in Africa: Johannesburg

Continuing on our “Best of AirBnB’s in Africa” series we’re onto Johannesburg, South Africa. It can be tricky deciding where exactly to stay in “Jozi” as it’s colloquially called. Traditionally travelers flocked to Sandton but with urban revitalization happening across the Central Business District (CBD) and nearby neighborhoods, you can choose a place based on your own personal style and needs.  Here are our picks: For Solo Travelers or Friends That Want to Share Tuscany in JHB Feel like you’re walking into an Italian vineyard when you enter the doors of Danielle’s Greenside home. The neighborhood main’s strip is great for bars and open-air places to chill. You may not ever want to leave the house though, you’ll feel very royal sitting at the table and if you’re lucky Dani and Meg will host you for dinner. The pros: elegant, unique style in Joburg The cons: Not for those that’ll […]

Best AirBnB’s in Africa: Accra

Outside of South Africa, a decently priced hotel with the creature comforts you’ve come to love with your globetrotting self (even if that’s in your head) is actually a hard thing to come by on the continent.  Our friends at Hotels.Ng and sleepout.com have a pretty awesome selection of boutique hotels but we’re excited that locals are slowly beginning to embrace one of our favorite things: AirBnB. We’ve taken the liberty of doing some not-so-scientific research into some of the best AirBnB crashpads in Accra, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lagos, and Nairobi to make your life easier the next time you book a trip. For those of you that like to rest your head in luxurious digs – don’t be quick to write these off – there are some baller-ific hosts that can make your dreams come true. Up first: Accra, Ghana Accra is probably the least developed of our the AirBnB cities […]
