FAQ

About Tastemakers Africa

What is our story?

Tastemakers Africa is the definitive guide for people who want to travel Africa and skip the mediocre. No long lists of suggestions or clunky websites, just the best of the best, presented beautifully on our website and mobile app. For the African creative, it’s a place where beautiful, interesting content about your ‘hood lets you share your world with people who are longing for some insight. For tour operators and guides it’s a place where you can put your best foot forward with innovative, premium experiences for a mobile audience. And for travelers,  we offer epic ways to travel in Africa through our mobile app (TSTMKRS for iOS and Android), virtual concierge, and small group travel experiences.

Who do we work with?

We support local tour operators and curators who create authentic experiences with interesting stories. We only do special things. Things with heart. Things thought out by people committed to fundamentally creating a change in what people think “Africa” is. No lion hunting or weird poverty voyeurism (yes, that’s a thing) just amazing things to do wherever you travel in the continent. Sign up to be one of our elite suppliers at tastemakersafrica.com/partner, and we’ll be in touch. Interest has been overwhelming, so please bear with us!

Can’t I do this myself?

You could if you’re down to spend real time getting to know people in every African city, create new systems on quality assurance, and connect the dots where they’ve never been connected before. But enough with the technical talk – why would you want to? A bespoke experience in a digital environment from a brand you trust to always have the scoop – it’s what dreams (and epic vacays) are made of.

So you’re like Yelp for Africa?

Nope. Do you really need the stuff that sucks when you’re planning some R & R or trying to mix business and pleasure? We didn’t think so. We get straight to the point with the only things you should really consider.

Where is info on (fill in the city we don’t have tons of info on)?

We’re a young company that’s committed to the quality of our recommendations. If you’d like to submit something awesome – please sign up to be a contributor. We’re looking for curious people who like the “good life” to have some meaning to it. We’ll be on the lookout for the goodness you send our way.

Tech Issues

My transaction won’t go through.

Every now and again – our payment processor gets wonky. This could be for a number of reasons, non-US currency, address conflicts, or it just had a bad day. We get that this is frustrating but if this happens – don’t give up! Send an email to payments@tastemakersafrica.com and we’ll send over a more traditional invoice to get you sorted.

Tastemakers Tours

Why can’t I see the entire itinerary?

For the same reason Coca-Cola patented it’s recipe. We can’t give away the secret sauce before we know you’ve committed – we’re coy like that. We promise, what you see here is only the tip of the iceberg of your experience. We revel in surprises that make you want to travel with us again. If you’ve got a pressing question that’s stopping you from saying “I’m in!” email us at hello@tastemakersafrica.com

Why aren’t flights included?

We’re pretty excited that we’ve got travelers from New York to London to Lagos and everywhere in between falling in love with our take on travel in Africa. We’d rather focus on making sure you have the best time ever once you arrived than being flight control all over the world. However – we get that finding a flight isn’t always the easiest thing to do. We send tips, preferred airlines, and sometimes flight deals to all of our confirmed travelers on a Tastemakers Tour.

Why 12 people?

There is a level of trust and comfort that happens when a group is not too large yet not too small. Call it the Goldilocks effect. For us 12 seems to be juuuust right. Are you the last person to sign up and you want to bring a friend? It’s cool – pay us in dark chocolate truffles and we’ll call it evens.

Do I need a visa?

Depending on the passport you are traveling on and/or your country of residence you may need a visa (sometimes in advance) for some of our destinations. Once you are a confirmed traveler we guide you through the process giving you all the invitation letters, proof of travel, etc. that you need to be successful in your effort.

I’ve paid my deposit – when do I pay the rest?

Now that we go together – we can take our time and really nurture this relationship. You can do monthly payments or a lump sum payment for the balance of your trip – the choice is yours. You just have to be all paid up 30 days ahead of departure. We’ll send you your final invoice and request info on how you’d like to handle the balance within 7 days of receiving your deposit.

Refund Policy

Why can’t I get all of my money back?

Most of our group travel experiences sell out fast and we close our booking window in order to create something special with the group. Once we hit the 90 days before the trip mark we’re pretty set with the vibe and have stopped promoting the trip altogether. We’ve started paying people and ironing out all of the minor details and there’s no turning back. Before 90 days – you cancel, you got it. Afterwards we’ll give you a partial refund to account for this.

Last-minute emergencies…

We get it, life can throw a wrench in even the most detailed of plans. We require all travelers on our group experiences to have trip insurance to cover these sort of things. In the app we give a full refund for non-redeemed experiences.

I’ve never been published, can I still get involved?

All good. We’re looking for established writers and photographers AND the rising stars. Who knows – writing for us might very well make you a legend. Go ahead and get that submission in and share your awesome with the world.

What are the submission criteria?

We like written pieces to come in at about 500 words, enough to get the people going. Links to other dope stuff are always a nice touch. We’re open to photo stories and video as long as it’s beautifully shot. Written submissions must be accompanied by 5-7 original photos.

We are a stickler on the visuals – we apologize if you’re still on that flip phone but we just can’t publish that photo on our site. No hard feelings. You can check out our editorial guidelines here.

What’s in it for me?

Tastemakers Africa is the premier way to connect with the next generation of African travelers reaching nearly 100,000 premium millennial travelers a day. They touch their mobile phone more than 70 times per day and are very selective in where they spend their money. Not only does Tastemakers Africa bring you new travelers with disposable income from around the African continent and the world, we provide training in areas that will help your business year round.

The TSTMKRS mobile app

When will there be new stuff on the app?

We’re constantly adding new experiences in the TSTMKRS app. Each experience is vetted or tested by our experience scouts and team so it takes a bit before you get to see it. If you’ve got a suggestion or are interested in being a scout email hello@tastemakersafrica.com
