Why you should do this
Alexandra Township (known as Alex, or Gomora) is the oldest township in South Africa and a bustling part of Johannesburg. In-between Alex's bustling marketplaces and working communities, there are reminders everywhere of the township's storied history, struggles, progress and influence in South African art, culture and politics. You'll take tours of the Heritage Museum, Nelson Mandela's first Johannesburg house, and Kings Theatre - learning everything you need to know about the stories that built Alex. You'll also have breakfast with commuters; lunch with a local family; and drinks and music at a township tavern - experiencing a true day in the life of an Alex Johannesburger.
What's included
  • Traditional Breakfast
  • Home Cooked Lunch
  • Market Tour
  • Kings Theatre Tour
  • Alexandra Heritage Museum Tour
  • Mandela House
  • Tavern Drinks and Jazz Music

Meeting Mamo was such a blessing. I had such an amazing time with her learning about the deep and rich history of Alex. The pride, resiliency, and love shown from the individuals I met really make this experience what it is. We so often hear about Soweto, but nothing of Alex. This is a must for anyone visiting Jozi.
